What is the Power of One?

Our mission

To motivate and encourage individuals to positively affect the lives of others one person at a time.

About us

The Power of One, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of the global AIDS pandemic. The Power of One started as a response to a simple question. At an awareness event on December 5, 2002, the lead singer of the band U2, Bono, asked, “What are you going to tell your grandchildren you did while an entire continent withered away from AIDS?”

Bono then shared some statistics that gave the question a sense of urgency. 6500 Africans die every day from AIDS. 2.4 million Africans died in 2004 from AIDS. There are currently 12 million AIDS orphans in Africa. These statistics seem unreal, unimaginable…unbelievable.

Seeing is believing

It's often easy to hide behind statistics, to ignore them because they're just stick figures, not real people. Statistics don't have feelings, families, faith in a God or a future.

Behind these staggering statistics are real people with fears, desires, faces and names.

In August 2004, 11 members of The Power of One team traveled to Eldoret, Kenya to film a documentary to share the stories of these people with beautiful faces and names. When you see them, you believe that you have to do whatever is in your power to care for their feelings, feed their families, have faith and envision a brighter future. While numbers may not tell the whole story, they are important. The number one must be seen as just as powerful as all the big numbers. After all, somewhere along the line twelve million started out as just one.
